There is a reason couples fall for Cottesloe Civic Centre.

Perched above Cottesloe Beach with the Indian Ocean on the horizon, the Civic Centre is all old-world romance: a 1930s Spanish Mission building, a grand limestone staircase, and a Secret Garden tucked away down winding green paths. As a Perth wedding photographer, it is one of the most timeless, character-filled venues I get to shoot, and the light through those gardens is something else.

What to expect

Your Cottesloe day, moment by moment

A garden ceremony in front of the Spanish Mission building at Cottesloe Civic Centre

Vows in the Secret Garden

The Secret Garden is the Civic Centre’s hidden gem, tucked among lush greenery and winding paths with the heritage building as your backdrop. It is intimate, green and a little bit magic, the kind of spot that makes a ceremony feel like a secret shared with your favourite people.

The Spanish Mission building, arched colonnade and lawn at Cottesloe Civic Centre

Spanish Mission grandeur

Claude de Bernales redeveloped the building in Spanish Mission style back in 1937, and it still has that old-world drama: white-rendered archways, an arched colonnade and a terracotta roof, heritage-listed and timeless. It lends every photo a real sense of occasion.

The grand staircase

The grand limestone staircase is the Civic Centre’s signature, sweeping up between ornate balustrades toward the Secret Garden. It is the spot everyone wants a photo on, and for good reason, it makes you feel like you are making an entrance.

Grounds made for wandering

Beyond the building the grounds open into sweeping lawns, ornate stonework and leafy paths framed by towering Norfolk pines. There is so much room to breathe, to wander, and to slip away for a few quiet portraits.

Golden hour above the ocean

The grounds terrace down toward Cottesloe and the Indian Ocean, so as the sun drops the whole place turns warm and golden. Long lunches under the loggia, a view to the water, and the kind of evening light that ends up framed on your wall.
