The most inland vineyard in Western Australia.

Walkers Hill Vineyard is a family-run winery in the rolling farmland of the eastern Wheatbelt, just north of Lake Grace. It makes Shiraz, Chardonnay and Rosé, runs a cellar door and a restaurant by booking, and hosts the kind of country celebration where everyone knows everyone. For couples marrying in or around Lake Grace it is a natural choice for the reception: rustic in the best way, with the catering and the setup handled, and a roof if the weather turns. That is exactly why Courtney and Jason chose it.

Getting there: Walkers Hill Vineyard is at 6321 Kulin-Lake Grace Road, Lake Grace WA 6353, about 8 km north of Lake Grace and four and a half hours south-east of Perth. I travel to regional weddings across Western Australia.

What to expect

Your day at Walkers Hill, moment by moment

Horse and dog figurines on a wedding cake set on a wine barrel at Walkers Hill Vineyard

Country, with a little polish

Rustic buildings, farmland in every direction and a relaxed pace. It suits a wedding that is country-themed but still dressed up, right down to the cake, which came from the vineyard too.

Ceremony on the land, reception at the winery

Many couples out here marry on a family property and bring everyone to the vineyard afterwards. Courtney and Jason did exactly that, and it gave them the best of both.

Light that does the work

Out in the Wheatbelt there is nothing between you and the sunset. In spring the paddocks around Lake Grace turn yellow and green with capeweed, canola, barley and wheat.

A plan for the weather

The reception room has a draped ceiling and a whole wall of fairy lights, so rain becomes a change of scene rather than a crisis, and the room glows once the sun goes down.

A photographer who comes to you

Four and a half hours from Perth is not far for the right wedding. I plan the travel around your timeline so the day itself is unhurried.

A real wedding at Walkers Hill Vineyard

Courtney & Jason

Vows on their own farm, on the hill where they got engaged, under an arbour Jason built himself. Then the vineyard: a chair dash with every table, a cake cut with a battle axe, and a first dance they had choreographed and practised.
