The Hill Where It Started

If this is what a backyard wedding looks like, the rest of us need to step up.

Courtney and Jason live on a farm near Lake Grace, about four and a half hours south-east of Perth, and their lives revolve around it and their animals. So when it came to choosing where to get married, there was only ever one answer.

They chose the same spot where they got engaged: an open patch in the trees on a hill, with a simple view. Golden capeweed, barley, canola and wheat in every direction. Jason built the arbour and the benches himself, by hand.

It is also a spot that means something more to Jason. His first horse is buried nearby. He was meant to be part of the proposal, and did not make it.

A First Look With Dad

The brief was country, but classy. In their words, a wedding where everyone looks nice.

Before the ceremony there was one quiet moment just for Courtney and her dad, the first time he saw her in her dress. A little bit teary, a little bit stunned, and a whole lot proud.

Turn Around, Jason

Jason stood at the arbour with his back to the aisle as Courtney walked towards him. He only turned round when he got a tap on the shoulder, so the first time he saw her she was right there, close enough to touch.

No nerves, no noise. Just her.

Everyone, From the Ladder

No receiving line. Instead, straight after the signing, one big photo of every guest, taken from the top of a ladder.

Later, in front of the house, the portrait they asked for most: the two of them and the dogs.

Walkers Hill Vineyard

The reception was at Walkers Hill Vineyard, a family-run winery just north of town and the most inland vineyard in Western Australia. It has the rustic charm they wanted for a country wedding, and it was the safe choice if the weather turned.

Dinner was a buffet. Jason's favourite part of the whole day was sitting down at the head table and, for the first time, sitting together as husband and wife, surrounded by the people they love. Then came a chair dash with every table, and speeches from their parents, his brother Joel (also the MC), the maid of honour and best man, and the two of them.

The cake came from the vineyard too, and it carried the whole farm on top, horses and dogs included. And yes, they cut it with a battle axe.

The Dance They Practised

Of everything they planned, this was the part Courtney looked forward to most: the first dance, their first intimate moment as husband and wife. They had choreographed it and practised it, and it showed.

The dips, the spins, and that dress mid-spin.
