Six Years In, and Long Overdue

Arden and Kobi had been together six years and were freshly engaged by the time they came to the gardens, and like a lot of couples who are completely at home with each other, they had barely any photos to show for it. Not the posed kind, not even the good casual kind. They are quietly creative, a little bit nerdy and happiest at home, the sort of pair who would rather be curled up with a good book than standing in front of a camera. So an evening dedicated entirely to the two of them was a lovely, slightly unfamiliar thing, and one their family had been gently asking for.

There is a soft story behind this one too, the kind that is theirs to tell, not mine. What I will say is that their proposal was anything but ordinary. Kobi went to quietly extraordinary lengths to get it right, choosing a moment that honoured someone they love and carry with them, in a place that has always meant something to them both. It is the kind of gesture that tells you everything about a couple, and you can feel that history in the way they lean into each other without thinking about it.

An Evening at Wanneroo Botanic Gardens

The gardens were their pick, and it is easy to see why. Wanneroo Botanic Gardens is all towering palms, tree ferns and dense greenery, with brick paths winding past a lily pond, an ornamental bridge and the odd old lamp post tucked into the foliage. We timed it for late afternoon, so the light went warm and soft through the canopy just as we got started.

It is a setting that does a lot of the work on its own. Point the camera in almost any direction and there is greenery, depth and a bit of golden light filtering through, which means a couple can simply be themselves and the place takes care of the rest.

Keeping It Candid

Both of them said the same thing up front. Posing was not their style, they could not summon a smile on command, and the photos they actually loved were the candid, documentary kind. That happens to be exactly how I like to work, so we kept it simple.

Kobi wore a light blue shirt and tan chinos, Arden a simple white dress, and from there we mostly just had them walk, talk, get in each other’s space and forget the camera was there. No big set-ups, no stiff hands, just the two of them wandering the gardens as the sun dropped.

The good stuff almost always lives in the in-between moments, the quiet laugh, the half-step closer, the look that is not for anyone else. A kiss on the hand here, a forehead resting against another there.

As the Light Turned Gold

The last half hour was the best of it. The sun dropped low behind the trees, the whole garden lit up gold, and the two of them stopped thinking about the camera entirely. This is the part of an engagement session I love most, when a couple settles into each other and the rest of the world goes quiet.

By the end they had loosened right up, which is the whole point of an engagement session. It gives a camera-shy couple a low-stakes run before the wedding day, a chance to work out what feels natural together. And it leaves them with something they did not have before: a handful of real, warm photos of the two of them, the kind a mum and a nan have been waiting years for.

Common Questions About an Engagement Session

What should we wear to an engagement session? Keep it simple and comfortable, in tones that sit nicely together rather than matching exactly. Arden and Kobi went with a soft white dress and a light blue shirt with chinos, which sat beautifully against all the green. Avoid loud logos or busy patterns and wear something you can move and relax in. The same thinking applies to most shoots, so our what to wear guide is a handy starting point for couples too.

When is the best time for garden photos? The last hour or two before sunset. The light goes warm and soft, the harsh midday shadows are gone, and a leafy spot like Wanneroo Botanic Gardens glows.

Is Wanneroo Botanic Gardens good for engagement photos? Very. Established palms, ferns, a lily pond and winding paths give you greenery and variety in every direction, all within a compact, easy-to-walk space.
